It's humid where we live in Texas 10 months out of the year, and usually running the air conditioner or heater takes care of that, except for the months when it's too warm for the heater, but too cool to run the AC.During those periods, the house tends to get humid in certain rooms, which can make it feel cold and clammy or hot and stuffy, which is uncomfortable in either case.We have one room in particular that is an addition which we use for a theater room which has its own separate mini-split unit, but we only use it in the evening when watching TV. The rest of the time, nobody is in the room.The mini-split has a “Dry” function, but it's really just the air conditioner running, so it gets cold in the room when running it on that setting.It also uses close to 1,000 watts, so it's a lot of power to use just to keep the humidity out.I ordered this unit specifically for that room, set it up and turned it on to test it out.At the time, the temperature outside was 70 degrees and 80% humidity and the room was 73 degrees with 68% humidity and was not comfortable.In about an hour, I could feel a big difference in the comfort feeling in the room and it was 71 degrees with 52% humidity.For reference, the room is 12' x 26' and opens up into the main living room of the house with two cased openings that are 4' wide.I even started to feel a difference into the main living room, which is 24' x 32', with no other air conditioning running at the time.After 2 hours, the humidity level had dropped down to 48% which is as good as the big AC does in the main part of the house.Considering this unit operates on only 350 watts of electricity, that is almost one-third the power consumption of the 12,000 BTU mini-split in the “Dry” mode, so it's very efficient in comparison.It can also be set to where it shuts off automatically once the desired humidity level is reached, so there's even more opportunity for money savings there on power usage.I just built a guest/hall bath on the back wall in the space, and have an access panel to the tub drain, so after the test, I installed a drain just for this unit that goes into the house's plumbing drain.Now I don't have to worry about emptying the reservoir and the unit can run continuously.The sound level is not too bad and is about the same as the fan on the projector or the compressor running on a countertop ice maker and after a while, you get used to it and it just blends in like white noise.So far, it's functioning like I hoped and I will see how it holds up over time.The power savings works like this:650 watts less than the mini-split on “dry” modeMultiple by 12 hours per day times (x) .15 per kwh = $35.00 per month +/-With this calculations, the unit will pay for itself in about 5 months versus using the mini-split.I will be interested to see in the hot months if the air from the big AC running in the main living room will migrate into the theater room and with the combination of the dehumidifier, will be comfortable enough in the evening so as not to have to run the AC in there.If so, that will definitely be a big savings 8-9 months out of the year.Will update when I get a chance to test that out.The unit was shipped and received fast.
